Anger Management Therapy

Anger is often misunderstood. Many people have been taught that anger is something to suppress, fear, or control. In reality, anger is a natural human emotion that often serves an important purpose. It can signal that a boundary has been crossed, a need has gone unmet, or that we are experiencing hurt, fear, disappointment, or injustice. While anger itself is not the problem, the ways we express or respond to it can sometimes create challenges in our relationships, work, and daily lives.

For some people, anger feels explosive and difficult to control. For others, it is turned inward, showing up as self-criticism, resentment, irritability, or emotional withdrawal. You may find yourself reacting more intensely than you would like, struggling to communicate your needs, feeling overwhelmed by frustration, or experiencing guilt and regret after conflict. These patterns can be exhausting and may leave you wondering why you continue to respond in ways that don't reflect who you want to be.

Our relationship with anger is shaped by many factors, including childhood experiences, family dynamics, attachment relationships, trauma, cultural expectations, and the ways emotions were expressed—or discouraged—growing up. Some people were taught that anger was unsafe or unacceptable, while others may never have had healthy models for expressing difficult emotions. Understanding these experiences can help make sense of why anger shows up the way it does today.

My approach to anger management goes beyond learning techniques to "stay calm." Together, we'll explore the experiences and patterns that contribute to your anger while developing practical strategies to regulate emotions, communicate more effectively, establish healthy boundaries, and respond to conflict in ways that feel intentional rather than reactive. Therapy is not about eliminating anger—it's about understanding what your anger is trying to communicate and learning how to respond to it with greater awareness and choice.

Drawing from attachment theory, trauma-informed care, mindfulness, and evidence-based therapeutic approaches, therapy is tailored to your individual needs and goals. Whether your anger feels explosive, constant, or difficult to understand, we'll work together to help you build healthier relationships with yourself and the people around you.

Anger is rarely the whole story. Together, we'll explore what lies beneath it, understand what it has been trying to protect, and develop new ways of responding that reflect your values rather than your reactions.

Anger management therapy is offered online or in-person in Port Coquitlam. Please reach out for further enquires or book your session today!
